My Brightest Diamond

I spent the last week being completely enchanted by the new Decemberists album which I finally managed to obtain (well, sometimes it takes a while) and although it feels like betrayal to listen to anything else as Stephen Brolan put it so exquisitely on his review, I simply had to look up Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond whose vocals on “The Hazards…” are etheral.
And so is her music. With a voice that seems to be somewhere between a very strong jazz-voice and PJ Harvey she sings songs that are almost always on the verge of dreams and nightmares. Harps, violins and piano add to the slightly surreal feeling you get when you listen to songs like “Inside a Boy” and self-titled “My Brightest Diamond”. Like the calm before the storm this music sounds dangerous and  mesmerizing at the same time. It is quite amusing how strong the female songwritership has grown in the past couple of years. Guys, you better watch out or you’ll be sitting on your Bob Dylan without much more to offer while the ladies roam the earth with unique and magical music.

Inside a boy (the video is not the best, the song, however, is)
